A form is a framework for a set of blocks, kicks, strikes, and other techniques which are performed in a specific sequence. In Korean martial arts like Tang Soo Do, forms are referred to as Hyung/Hyeong (형). The word Hyung translates to “frame” or “pattern” and has an equivalent term in Japanese martial arts known as Kata (形). Hyung are intended to teach student fighting and defense concepts which can be practice in a solo manner. Applying these concepts in a self-defense situation is often referred to as bunhae (Korean, 분해) or as it is more commonly known, bunaki (Japanese, 分解).

Forms have evolved to also physically prepare a students mind and body for sharpness and fitness. Forms have become a popular method by which to compete in tournaments and even the Olympics!

Sae Kye Hyung Series

The Sae Kye Hyung series of forms are designed to introduce beginner students to the concept of form in traditional martial arts. These beginner forms are the first step along the path of mastering more advanced forms later in the journey to black belt.

The Sae Kye Hyung series are “newer” forms in the larger world of forms. This series was created in 1987 by Grandmaster Jae Chul Shin. These three forms replaced the Ki Cho Hyung series which was very similar, but did not include any kicking techniques. These forms keep the spirit of the original Ki Cho Hyung forms while also introducing students to kicking earlier in their training.

Pyung Ahn Series

The Pyung Ahn series of forms introduces the student to intermediate and advanced form patterns. The techniques in the Pyung Ahn series can be broken-down into practical and effective self-defense techniques to use against an assailant. This series of forms is shared across many other traditional martial arts with many variations and interpretations.

The Pyung Ahn hyung are a series of five forms which originated in Okinawa. These forms eventually spread to Japan and then Korea which is why many traditional styles contain these forms. They were reorganized by Master Itosu, an Okinawan practitioner of Tote and mentor of Funakoshi Gichin. They were originally a single form called Jae Nam (Channan). To make them easier to learn and safer for younger practitioners, the form was divided, and the more dangerous and lethal techniques were removed. The phrase “Pyung Ahn” (平安, 평안) is a direct Korean translation of the Kanji/Hanja characters that spell the word Pinan/Heian in Japanese. In English, it translates to “Peaceful Mind” or “Peace and Safety.” The idea being that anyone who is proficient in these forms can be confident in keeping themselves safe. For a more comprehensive description of these hyung see Pinan Kata.
